The
Mary Weems Barton Foundation was established in 1997 with the sole purpose of
supporting and enhancing the Library by supplying funds for materials,
equipment, and capital improvements.
The Mary Weems
Barton/Quincy Public Library Board of Directors is made up of three community
members, four members of the Quincy Public Library Board of Trustees and the
Director of the Library. In 2002, the Foundation took the first step toward extending its reach into the community. The Foundation’s Board voted to donate $5,000 to establish an endowment fund within the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area . This endowment fund allows community members to donate to the Library Foundation through the Community Foundation for the Quincy Area. The Library Foundation also is able to share in all advertising and promotional campaigns through the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area. In 2005, the Foundation created an endowment for the Quincy Historical Newspaper Archive. This allows patrons to directly support the Archive through the Mary Weems Barton/Quincy Public Library Foundation. Having been awarded a Marion Gardner Jackson Foundation matching grant for $75,000 in 2004, the Foundation began a capital campaign to raise the remaining amount needed to purchase property adjoining the Quincy Public Library at 515 York. In 2007, the Foundation announced that it had completed the capital campaign and finalized the purchase. The property, now known as the Quincy Public Library Annex, has housed a number of special library events including the bi-annual Friends of the Library Booksale, "If You Lived In Lincoln's Time" programs, annual Teen Gingerbread House Workshop, and the NAJWA Dance Corps. The Annex was also the home of the annual Good News of Christmas Campaign in December of 2007.
